Acclaimed writer and director Katie Wolfe (Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Toa Rangatira), best known for The Haka Party Incident, brings the extraordinary story of Tiri Mahana to the stage in the powerful new adaptation - Tiri: Te Araroa Woman Far Walking.
Spanning 185 years, the epic tale follows the matriarch's life from her birth at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi through to present-day Aotearoa, and will be presented at Brisbane Powerhouse from September 10–13 as part of this year's Brisbane Festival.
This beautiful retelling was conceived by Witi Ihimaera (Te Whānau a Kai and Ngāti Porou), writer of the BAFTA and NZ Film Award winning film The Whale Rider, adapted from his best-selling book of the same name.
With award-winning actors Miriama McDowell (Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi) and Nī Dekkers-Reihana (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Porou), audiences are invited to a play for the whole whānau where Tiri wants us all to remember that the good things, the right things in life, are worth fighting for.
Woven into a deeply emotional tapestry celebrating wāhine Māori and the emergent rangatahi who will take Aotearoa forward, Witi Ihimaera’s extraordinary play will shine once again in this astonishing new production. Tiri Mahana’s message is a national treasure that will continue to resonate across time and place.
