Australian artist Lincoln Austin is bringing their perspective on perception and play to young audiences as part of GOMA’s latest Art Box for Kids project from November 8, 2025, to May 4, 2026.

Austin’s practice is deeply rooted in the idea of perception – exploring how individuals uniquely view and interact with the world. “I really like this idea that two people can be standing and looking at the same artwork but see something quite different,” says Austin. “It’s a reminder that we each see the world differently.”

Artist making works from foil string & glue

Austin’s Art Box for Kids activity invites children to create sculptural drawings using simple materials – aluminium foil, string, and glue. “It’s not really a drawing. It’s actually a sculpture that reads as a drawing,” Austin explains. The process encourages tactile engagement and creative exploration, reinforcing the artist’s belief in “thinking with your hands.”

Lincoln Austin-Out of sight

To inspire young visitors, on display are two of Austin’s works, Double Cross 2010 and Out of Sight 2013, that exemplify their fascination with optical phenomena and material experimentation. Double Cross, constructed from double-sided stainless-steel plates, plays with reflection and transparency, while Out of Sight uses lenticular techniques to animate the work as viewers move around it, revealing a ‘hidden’ sequence of six images.

Austin’s Art Box for Kids project is an invitation to explore and to experience the joy of making. Through Austin’s guidance, children are encouraged to see differently, think differently and create with curiosity.
