Tony Albert: Visible
Qag
Tony Albert: Visible is a major solo exhibition profiling the new and recent work of Indigenous artist Tony Albert, showing at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) from 2 June 2018 until 7 October 2018.
Showcasing the Queensland-born artist’s vital and incisive work from 2002 up to the present, the stunning exhibition was developed by Bruce Johnson McLean, Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at QAGOMA.
‘Visible’ includes all components of Tony Albert’s practice – from found object-based collage, to painting, photography, video and installation. Many of the works featured in the exhibition highlight the artist’s lifelong passion - collecting ‘Aboriginalia’ - decorative items of kitsch ‘Australiana’ featuring Aboriginal people and motifs, which he then works into sculptural, text-based installations which directly address the racial histories embodied in the objects.
About the Artist
Born in Townsville and raised in Brisbane, Tony Albert graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 2004. Since then he’s gone on to establish a nationally recognised practice that interrogates representations of Aboriginal people through a mix of humour and poignancy, while tackling the serious issues of race and representation head-on.
With works in major international, national and private collections Tony’s success in recent years has burgeoned to include a number of prestigious awards and opportunities.
In 2014 he was awarded the Basil Sellers Art Prize and the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, he then secured the Fleurieu Art Prize and a residency in New York, and following that he was commissioned to create the monumental public artwork YININMADYEMI Thou didst let fall 2015 in Sydney’s Hyde Park which commemorates the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who served in the Australian military.
Nice to know - At the Children's Art Centre there is a special corresponding program of free art activities - Tony Albert: We Can be Heroes up until Oct 7
