Songs That Made Me

Concert Hall Qpac

An inspiring finale to this year’s WOW Festival 2018 will be talented female musicians singing and playing up a storm in Songs That Made Me, Sunday, April 8, Concert Hall, QPAC.

The shining stars performing include Aussies Clare Bowditch, Deborah Conway, Emily Wurramara and Hannah Macklin, while other special guests include Fiji’s ‘Queen of Pop’ Laisa Lualala Vulakoro, ShoShona Kish from Juno Award-winning Canadian duo, Digging Roots, and Brisbane multicultural vocal ensemble, The Verandah ChiX, with a sizzling all-women house band backing them up.

In case you haven’t heard of the annual festival, WOW stands for Women of the World – a very topical theme at present and one which is of great importance every year. Founded by the Artistic Director of London’s Southbank Centre, Jude Kelly, it celebrates women and girls and looks at the obstacles stopping them from achieving their potential. Events now take place in over 23 cities across six continents. WOW at Festival 2018 is a very special celebration for women and girls across the Commonwealth of Nations created as part of the GC2018 Commonwealth Games arts and cultural program. Of course, men and boys are very welcome to join in the festivities.

QPAC partners with WOW to present Songs That Made Me, which was staged as part of Queensland Music Festival (QMF) 2017, with each performer asked to share stories of their personal influences, artistic journeys and landmark songs in their lives. The format is the brainchild of QMF Artistic Director, Katie Noonan, who’s thrilled to have it adopted for WOW.

A special announcement will also be made at the concert, with the 2018 Carol Lloyd Award winner being given a $15,000 grant in honour of Brisbane’s own original rock chick, to help the recipient with their own singing and songwriting career.
