Brisbane's Best Suburban Bistros

Updated: Jul 04, 2026

Remember the days of the suburban bistro? Once upon a time the inner suburbs of Brisbane were dotted with bistro style restaurants, most of them BYO, the locals would dress up and walk to and where they could enjoy a quality meal surrounded by character withour heading to the city.

In recent years Brisbane has seen a bit of a resurgence of this style of suburban bistro, although these days they are mostly licensed. Here's where to find them:

Sauce Bistro is one of Brisbane's suburban gems - a slick little neighbourhood restaurant in Ashgrove
Bema Kitchen is a cosy neighbourhood bistro occupying an historic corner store, tucked away off the beaten track in Paddington
This elegant little Parisian-inspired bistro is dishing up fine food and bespoke wine to lucky locals
Kent Road Bistro offers an affordable fine dining experience with Mod Oz cuisine influenced by French and Italian fare
A traditional slice of France found atop an inner westside hill with sweeping views and a menu of mouthwatering French classics
Haig Rd Bistro is a charming French bistro that brings a taste of Alsace to a colonial Auchenflower cottage
A hunting theme pervades this cosy rabbit warren of a bistro which offers a unique degustation menu

Having opened in 1989, 2 Small Rooms was one of the first fine dining restaurants in Brisbane's suburbs and today it's still going strong
