Fun Historical Places For Kids Around Brisbane

Brisbane and surrounds offer children and families a wide range of opportunities to experience living history. From an old world tram ride to experiencing life in a Victorian mansion, here are some great ways to learn about life in the "olden days":

Wander around this replica village which is also home to a working blacksmith's forge, an old fashioned lolly shop and a bustling Sunday market. A visit to Pine Rivers Heritage Museum's school room and Yebri House are also a must visit
Travel back in time to Beenleigh Historic Village and museum, where anyone can learn about the daily struggles of the early settlers. A visit to the Old Beenleigh post office is a real treat as is Wilkie's General Store and various replica cottages
Fort Lytton was built in 1880 to defend Brisbane from enemy attacks. These days, there are guided tours and military re-enactments, including the firing of a 64 pound cannon
It is possible to ride one of Brisbane's original trams every Sunday at this Ferny Grove terminus. There are a number of well-preserved trams at Brisbane Tramway Museum dating from 1897 until 1969
This is the place to take any railway enthusiasts. There are plenty of hands on, interactive activities to keep little ones occupied. Day Out With Thomas are just a few of the fun events which run in the school holidays
Be transported to the colonial days at Samford District Historical Museum. The museum is filled with heirlooms and memorabilia, including antique toys, carriages and old farming machinery
Mini pirates and their families will love visiting this one, where it is possible to investigate lots of interesting nautical equipment as well as explore the WW2 frigate, HMAS Diamantina and the 1907 pearling lugger, Penguin
A unique place to explore history and view artefacts through the ages, guaranteed to keep children entertained, with a Kids Dig It Archaeology program during the school holidays & guided activities throughout the day
A collection of historic buildings (with two being original to the site), which showcase the history of the area, including the old school house and a craft cottage. There is also a kids playground in the grounds
Once of the few remaining sites from the convict era the free heritage site incorporates a wartime aircraft hangar and an Interpretive Centre with interactive portals including a cinema room showing historic aviation film reels
Toowoomba is home to the National Carriage Collection and includes fun, interactive learning experiences for children. They hold regular heritage workshops as well as popular school holiday programs
