Romance And Revolution

The Edge, Slq

Described as “the most exciting young string quartet on the block”, Camerata’s Quartet-in-Residence, Orava Quartet, perform an unforgettable night of music in Romance and Revolution.

The program includes dramatic and moving works from the great Russians: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and Shostakovich.

Romance and Revolution

Haydn's 'Russian' quartets were dedicated to Grand Duke Paul of Russia, and Rachmaninoff's first, unfinished, string quartet, composed as a youth of 17, provides glimpses of the heart-rending Romantic melodies that would make his music so widely known and loved.

In contrast, Shostakovich’s emotionally wrenching string quartet no.8, composed after a visit to the bombed city of Dresden, was officially dedicated to the victims of fascism and war, and remains a timely reminder of the tragedy and human cost of conflict.

Romance and Revolution

Finally, Orava performs Tchaikovsky's glorious String Quartet No. 1, an immediate success in Russia and abroad, and one of the most popular works in chamber music. Featuring the famous Andante Cantabile which is said to have moved Leo Tolstoy to tears, the Orava Quartet brings this classic work to life with their signature passion and intensity.

Presented by Camerata - Queensland's Chamber Orchestra and Orava Quartet, the concert also launches Orava Quartet's long-awaited debut album for Universal Music, as Deutsche Grammophon Australia's historic first release.
