Leah Cotterell: The Pleasure Of Sad Songs
Judith Wright Centre
Revel in the beauty of Leah Cotterell’s voice as she performs the very personal and moving The Pleasure of Sad Songs at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
In the intimate cabaret performance presented by the Judy and Women in Voice, Cotterell opens up about her own personal experience as a carer and how writing and performing songs has given her comfort and joy amid the challenges. With both her mother and brother experiencing mental illness – agoraphobia, schizophrenia and dementia – the singer lays bare her soul in this musical journey.
The Pleasure of Sad Songs has come about from Cotterell’s postgraduate research at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, in which she explored communication through song. She proposes that “sharing music allows us to immerse ourselves in emotion, without consequence”.
It’s sure to be a memorable and moving show, with fellow singer extraordinaire, Katie Noonan, describing it as: “storytelling of real courage, authenticity and compassion”. The performances have particular significance as they coincide with Queensland Mental Health Week.
