Ambatye Urrpetye - My Family
Mitchell Fine Art
Stunning works of Aboriginal art from luminaries Kathleen Petyarre, Margaret Loy Pula and Abie Loy Kemarre will feature in Ambatye Urrpetye – My Family, at Mitchell Fine Art, 5 – 29 July.
The exhibition explores the generational stories and artistic styles that have been passed from grandmother to daughter to granddaughter, continuing on the tradition of Aboriginal art depicting culture, tradition and stories from the past to help ensure their ongoing survival through song, dance, ceremony and design.
Those who are familiar with the Petyarre family name know that seven sisters are renowned for their art. In Ambatye Urrpetye, one of those sisters, Kathleen, will share the artistic stage with her daughter, Margaret Loy Pula and granddaughter, Abie Loy Kemarre.
The paintings as a whole reflect the ongoing culture and tradition of the Anmatyerre women of Utopia in Central Australia. Kathleen was the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award winner in 2001, while Abie was a finalist in the same awards on several occasions. She’s regarded as one of the leading contemporary Indigenous artists in Australia with her use of colour and bold, abstract forms.
Margaret was the first female artist to win the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and also won the Arthur Guy Memorial Prize at Bendigo Art Gallery this year. She paints her culture and her father’s dreaming.
Need to know – On Saturday, 8 July, a curator’s talk will be held at 2pm to discuss the artists and artworks in the exhibition.
