Journeys North is a a photographic exhibition about Queensland’s community life that is being shown for the first time in 30 years at the Queensland Art Gallery.
Photographers Graham Burstow, Lin Martin, Robert Mercer, Glen O’Malley, Charles Page and Max Pam were commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery in the mid-1980s (with the financial assistance of the Australian Bicentennial Authority) to capture their ideas around the theme of community life in this state, with the exhibition’s first airing taking place in 1988.
At the time there were more than 150 photos of Queensland’s unique lifestyle, including Burstow’s Eyes Right, Coolangatta and Max Pam’s The Big Pineapple – which captured the quintessential lifestyle and imagery of the Sunshine State.
The current revisited Journeys North exhibition includes a selection of 74 photographs from the original portfolio so that visitors can reflect on the pictures, attitudes and photographers’ selections and judge for themselves if and how things have changed. It’s a great opportunity to see how natural and social themes were captured almost 30 years ago by some of our most talented photographers.
