For a piece of Brisbane Winter Festival action head in to King George Square, with an ice skating rink out front of City Hall, an alpine hut, chai latte lounge, European food stalls and all sorts of entertainment and goings-on day and night throughout the three festival weeks.
Ice skating sessions (of 45 minutes by day or night on the hour and available to prebook and pay on line) don't come cheap and attract massive queues but this is all outweighed by the novelty factor and interspersed with performances by speed and figure skaters and ice hockey players. (For children who are novice skaters a 'seal skating aid' can be pre-booked and hired.)
And for those who prefer getting wet on the inside than out the Alpine Hut is the place to be, with roaring fires, gluhwein and hot chocolate on tap. The Latte Lounge with views on the rink is made for kicking back with a coffee and food-wise expect German sausages, crepes, Hungarian Langos and other Euro style street food.
