QUT Gardens Theatre 2020

QUT Gardens Theatre has a bumper 2020 season planned, showcasing the very best Australian productions including a much-loved classic, a TV comedy adaptation, historical docu-drama, singing and dancing numbers, and more:

American Song

American Song – March 20 & 21, 2020

Tackling the confronting and heartbreaking issue of gun violence, American Song is an intimate exploration of love, forgiveness and parental responsibility. A thoroughly gripping, wryly humorous and deeply moving production.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll – June 9 & 10, 2020

Celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2020, this classic play moves from the Queensland cane fields to the bright lights of Melbourne, telling a story of passion, bittersweet romance and the yearning for lost youth. Featuring relatable characters, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll is poignant and humorous.

Hell Ship

Hell Ship – June 15 & 16, 2020

Hell Ship tells the dramatic true story of the catastrophic typhus outbreak which ravaged the emigrant-carrying Ticonderoga during its three-month-long journey from England to Port Melbourne. Told from the perspective of the ship’s surgeon, humour and razor-sharp wit combine to illuminate the hellish conditions on board.

Mother and Son

Mother and Son – July 7 & 9, 2020

From the creators of the iconic TV series starring Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald, this delightful stage version of Mother and Son promises a nostalgic trip down ‘loss-of-memory’ lane as Arthur and Maggie continue their hilariously-dysfunctional antics.

Margaret Fulton The Musical

Margaret Fulton: The Musical – September 8 & 9, 2020

Margaret Fulton – The Musical charts the Aussie culinary queen’s rise from home cook to a household name in the swinging ’60s. A playful musical comedy, this production celebrates Australia’s coming-of-age through the lens of this trailblazing woman of the world.

Wallflowering – September 15 & 16, 2020

Wallflowering sees world-class ballroom dancers taking to the stage alongside talented actors in an amusing and poignant play about a middle-aged suburban married couple who, in a past life, just so happened to be prize-winning ballroom dancers.

Lamb

Lamb – September 29 & 30, 2020

Featuring an exquisite soundtrack by Mark Seymour (Hunters and Collectors), Lamb follows two generations of an Australian sheep-farming family, and their four decades’ worth of lies and secrets, loves lost and opportunities missed.

In addition to these wonderful works, QUT Gardens Theatre will also host a stage production of the hit kids’ tale The 91-Storey Treehouse (April 14-17), plus a one-off performance of A Night to Remember with Tenori (Aug 18), and the annual QUT Showcase featuring some hot up-and-coming acting talents.
