The Many Lives Of Moreton Bay
Museum Of Brisbane
The Many Lives of Moreton Bay is a fascinating showcase of the unknown stories and newly discovered artefacts of the picturesque region right on Brisbane’s doorstep.
Centring around the bay’s unique history-laden islands - Moreton, North Stradbroke, Peel, St Helena and Bribie - that lie just 45 km from Brisbane’s CBD – the exhibition delves into darker times when they were home to a leper colony, a prison, a benevolent asylum and a whaling station.
Through a contemporary mix of visual arts, media, social history, including video interviews, archival footage, a painting gallery and an interactive map, visitors are privy to the intriguing past of the area.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is an extraordinary 1878 painting by a convict of prison life on St Helena Island (donated to MoB by Trisha Anderson), along with works by acclaimed artist Ian Fairweather and Ralph Wilson.
In addition, insights into the history of Moreton Bay, which today is one of SE Queensland’s most rapidly changing regions are provided by its traditional owners the Quandamooka people, a light house keeper family, a Port of Brisbane General Manager and a resort owner, to name a few.
