Opera Queensland offers entertaining shows and fun workshops for kids these September school holidays, including a classic Grimms' fairy tale, a modern re-telling of a much-loved opera, and vocal workshops for aspiring, young opera singers.

The Frog Prince, Sep 22-25, $25

The classic fairy tale leaps into the 21st century in this contemporary take from Opera Queensland and shake & stir theatre co. A spoiled princess and sassy frog form an unlikely friendship, as they embark on a fantastical and uplifting journey, learning lessons about friendship and the importance of looking after the environment along the way.

Featuring an energetic cast of young performers, The Frog Prince is a bright, quirky production and is the perfect way to introduce young audiences to musical theatre.

This show is suitable for ages 12 and under.

La bohème, Sep 24, $40

Puccini’s La bohème is re‑awakened with a contemporary spin that explores how young people cope with uncertainty and change in today’s pressured world. This intimate retelling of the much-loved opera follows a group of misfit friends learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and facing adversity as they set off on their new life together.

With its luminous score and headstrong passion, the coming together of Rodolfo, Mimi, Marcello and Musetta relates to the modern day in a way that is vibrant, authentic and truthful.

This performance is suitable for ages 13+.

Youth Choral Workshop, Sep 28, $120

This school holiday, students can explore ensemble pieces from contrasting periods in musical history in this full-day Choral Workshop. Joining vocal coach Susan Ellis and pianist Kylie Los, workshop attendees will work through stagecraft and language skills, building confidence and gaining performance experience in a choral setting.

This choral workshop is perfect for students preparing for auditions or AMEB exams. Call 3735 3030 for more information.

The Youth Choral Workshop is suitable for singers in years 7-12.
