Step back in time at The Abbey Museum these spring school holidays, with two unmissable events bringing history to life through hands-on fun, fascinating discoveries and immersive experiences that take you from Ancient Egypt and Rome to WWI.

First up, little history buffs can journey thousands of years into the past at Kids Dig It! Ancient Egypt, running from 21–23 September and designed especially for kids aged 5–12.

Forget simply reading about history - this is a chance to get hands-on with the ancient world. Young adventurers can try their hand at archery, paint their own Egyptian-inspired sarcophagus, uncover artefacts in an archaeological dig and discover the fascinating process of mummification.

Inside the Museum, children can also take part in games, quizzes and discovery activities while exploring the fascinating history of Ancient Greece and wonder at the vast collection of artefacts from around the world.

There’ll also be plenty of Egyptian-themed crafts to create and take home, while quizzes and discovery activities inside the Museum will encourage kids to explore its incredible collection of artefacts from around the world.

It’s a fun-filled way to get curious about one of history’s most fascinating civilisations, while letting kids learn through play, creativity and plenty of hands-on adventure.

But the history doesn’t stop there!

The Abbey History Festival returns on 26–27 September to celebrate 40 years of the Abbey Museum, offering another chance for families and history lovers to step into the past.

Think the award-winning Abbey Medieval Festival, but with fewer crowds and a much broader journey through history. Across the weekend, visitors can travel from Ancient Rome through to WWI, with living history encampments, workshops, performances and demonstrations bringing different eras to life.

You can wander through historical encampments, watch demonstrations and performances, get involved in workshops and discover what life was like across the centuries.

When it’s time for a break, the Abbeystowe market will be back with food and drinks to keep you fuelled, alongside a jam-packed schedule of entertainment to fill your day.
