Annamese is a hidden gem of a Vietnamese restaurant tucked away in the Brisbane Quarter dining precinct in the heart of Brisbane CBD.
From the owners of popular Vietnamese eatery Ming Ming's Kitchen in Wilston and Pho Real Vietnamese in Augustine Heights, Annamese provides a quality dining experience with a laidback vibe.
Annamese offers diners a choice of seating outside on the podium terrace or inside the charming interior with wood carved walls, Hanoi cherry blossoms and an ornate entry that is inspited by the gates at the doors of Vietnam's first university, the 1000 year-old Temple of Literature.
Furnishings and tablewares include imported Vietnamese fan lights designer tables fashioned out of Californian red oak and made in Vietnam, whilst bespoke tableware is from Vietnam's famous pottery town But Trang, where it is especially made to order for Annamese.
With a head chef who is a A Le Cordon Bleu graduate, the menu, which showcases the flavours of North Vietnam, features traditional dishes prepared with fine dining flair.
On the a la carte menu are small plates such as prawn cups (garlic prawn, cucumber, potato, kataifi & dill oil); pork floss, honey butter or chicken liver pâté banh mi; sautéed sweet corn; rice paper rolls (king prawn & BBQ pork or sticky tofu & beancurd stick); and signature mud crab and pork spring rolls.
A selection of medium plates includes crispy chicken wings (tossed crispy wingette, garlic fish sauce, chilli oil & black pepper); grilled pork vermicelli; Annamese wagyu beef salad (stir-fried garlic beef, pickled eggplant, vietnamese herbs, cherry tomato, onion, nuoc cham & prawn chips); and pho noodle dry (rice noodle, Vietnamese herbs, sticky soy & garlic beef or turmeric chicken) with the option to add poached egg or fried donut stick.
Large dishes (which come in generous portions) include Hanoi slow cooked pork belly (caramelised pork belly, quail eggs soy, pepper, coconut water & spring onion); turmeric pan-fried barramundi; charcoal lemongrass chicken; salted egg king prawns (golden king prawns, creamy salted egg yolk & dill oil); and Vietnamese beef stew (stewed intercostal beef, red wine jus smoked star anise, cinnamon, paprika & Vietnamese baguette).
For dessert there's a choice of pandan sticky rice with coconut ice cream & toasted coconut; crumbed fried ice cream & caramel sauce; banana fritters & chocolate sauce; and Vietnamese donut with condensed milk. To follow there's also hot or iced Vietnamese coffee, Vietnamese coconut coffee; fragrant herbal teas; and sweet Vietnamese cocktails such as Hanoi Autumn (coconut rum, pandan, coconut milk & lime).
From the drinks menu there's a great selection of Vietnamese flavoured cocktails such as Pho (gin, pho broth, basil & coriander tincture); and Viet Negroni (gin, sweet vermouth, coffee, campari & orange bitters); a curated list of Australian and NZ wines by the glass or bottle; a mix of Vietnamese, Asahi and craft beers; spirits including Vietnamese inspired gin and vodka; as well as a handful of mocktails, homemade iced tea, and lime or lychee soda.
Good to know - Annamese offers some great value lunch deals, with a choice of baguettes, vermicelli salads or rice bowls, with the option to add on a soft drink or Viet iced coffee for a small extra cost.
Need to know - You'll find Annamese on Podium 2, opposite Phat Boy and next door to Phoenix.
