Snow White

Audiences young and old are in for a real treat with two rarely seen classic screenings of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairytale Snow White at GOMA’s Australian Cinematheque.

Over 2 consecutive Sundays, the beautifully restored films from 1916 and 1937 will be shown in 2 sessions, one at 11am and the other at 1pm.

At 11am the original 1916 silent-action black and white Snow White movie, which for many years was thought to be lost will be presented, complete with live music accompaniment. After its discovery in 1992, the rare whimsical production was lovingly restored by the George Eastman House archive. This must see film captures all of the elements beloved by audiences – the beautiful princess, her wicked stepmother, the cheeky dwarfs and the handsome prince who whisks her away to Happily Ever After.

The live music accompaniment is by Italian classically trained pianist Mauro Colombis, who for the past decade has specialized in the accompaniment of silent cinema in festivals around the world.

At 1pm, Walt Disney’s ambitious 1937 animation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first feature-length animated film in the United States, will be shown. An extraordinary gargantuan undertaking which spawned an enduring deep affection for the genre for generations afterwards, the film comprised a staggering 2 million illustrations. Created by 32 animators, 102 assistants, 20 layout artists, 65 effects animators, 25 artists creating the watercolour backgrounds, 167 ‘in-betweeners’ and 158 inkers and painters, the film resulted in an honorary Oscar in 1939 for Walt Disney for his contribution to screen innovation and in 2008 was named the ‘Greatest Animated Film of All Time’ by the American Film Institute.
