Big Day Of Belonging

Slq

The State Library’s Big Day of Belonging returns in June with a lively Queensland-inspired marketplace of food, craft and entertainment alongside interactive library learning projects.

On the day’s program are BrisStyle market stalls of locally made products, local musicians, a free performance by QSO, a community weaving project and family focused art workshops.
Here are some highlights of this family-friendly event:

The Big Day of Belonging

BrisStyle Markets

For the first time these popular Brisbane markets, featuring 100% locally crafted wares, gifts, fashion and design indoor and outdoor objects and food stalls, are on site at the State Library, offering the chance to hear the story of the product, direct from the maker. Knowledge Walk, 10am-3pm

Free Music All Day

The Big Day of Belonging

Catch local musicians performing throughout the day from 10am-3pm in the Studio Courtyard or listen to the music program in the Library Café, while not to be missed is the instrument demonstration (11.15 am 11.45am in the Studio Courtyard) and free performance (1.30 -2 pm in SLQ Auditorium 1) by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Bookings req for the performance. BOOK HERE

Workshops

The Big Day of Belonging

First visit the Tradition Now exhibition upstairs, then join in the fun family activity of making artwork to add to a large scale ‘family tree’. Tradition Now artists Pamela See and Simone Eisler will introduce participants to paper cutting and simple sculptural forms to use in representing their family history. Knowledge Walk 10am-3pm. Free, no bookngs req.

Attendees are also invited to participate in the One Million Stars to End Violence community project by making a star to be a part of an installation at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. These beautiful stars are symbols of light, courage and solidarity to end all forms of violence, including violence against women, bullying and racism. Business Studio Level 1. 10am-3pm. Free. No bookings req.

Etsy International Craft Party

This free one hour workshop allows participants to unleash their creativity upstairs on the splendid Queensland Terrace under the expert guidance of a BrisStyle Markets facilitator, with all materials supplied, with task of the day the making of Himmeli, a Finnish Christmas decoration. 10am-11am, 12pm-1pm. Free. Booked out.

Story Exchange

The Big Day of Belonging

Visit one of SLQ’s Story Swap Shops, where Queensland writers will be on hand to collaborate and help transform participant’s own stories into a new creative work. Using anecdotes and events, truths and memories, dreams, plans, or tall tales from participant’s own lives and work the writers will help re-tell and re-imagine the stories to create the finished work. Knowledge Walk, 10am-3pm. Free. Register on the day

Human Library

In a total twist on the age-old concept of borrowing a library book, volunteers from across Brisbane will be on hand during the day to act as ‘human library books’, representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, areas of expertise, and life experiences. Attendees can get to sit down with them for an in-depth conversation, exchanging stories with theirs. Knowledge Walk 10am-3pm. Free. Register on the day.

Need to know – The Big Day of Belonging coincides with the opening of the Tradition Now exhibition, a new exhibition exploring how Queenslanders ‘arrive’ and then connect or disconnect from their families and traditions and the resulting impact on family life.

Nice to know – Stay tuned to the SLQ website for interviews with and details of artists and presenters in the lead-up to the Big Day of Belonging.
