The Happy Prince
Lyric Theatre QPAC
The Australian Ballet’s stunning interpretation of The Happy Prince makes its much-anticipated world premiere from February 25-29 at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre.
Based on the classic Oscar Wilde tale, The Happy Prince depicts the story of a beautiful golden statue, standing high on the hill and weeping for the suffering he sees in the city below. When a swallow befriends the kind statue, the bird then becomes his messenger, delivering gold leaf from the statue’s own body to the needy villagers.
A feast for the eyes and a salve for the heart, this dazzling ballet production features vibrant set and costume designs, as well as Australian motifs to give this classic story a decidedly local flavour.
Brilliantly adapted by renowned choreographer Graeme Murphy, this brand-new work is witty, poetic and bound to enchant both adults and children alike.
“Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince stimulated my childhood imagination a lifetime ago,” Murphy says. “This magical story of love and sacrifice will, I hope, inspire and delight another generation of dance-lovers.”
