Flickerfest

Judith Wright Centre

Flickerfest, Australia’s favourite short film festival, lights up the screen at the Judith Wright Centre for 3 nights with 20 great cinema shorts hand-picked by the Academy.

This year’s offerings are a mind-boggling array of cinematic stories, from runaway chickens, flyaway mothers and fearless dads to hot tub entanglements, mechanical mishaps and ice-cream frenzies. Amongst them are 4 Queensland films, 2 of which are feel-good films filmed in Brisbane that will kick off Flickerfest’s opening night.

One of these, Dane Hansen’s A New You stars local actors Thomas Larkin, Kevin Spink and Elle Popov and explores the role of the wingman while the other, The Duck, is Simon Cottee’s adaptation of Ben Loory’s quirky short story about a duck who falls hopelessly in unrequited love with a rock.

Also screening on Friday night is Brisbane director Miki Clarke’s Fell, featuring a stunning visual transformation of a Tasmanian landscape.

On Saturday night the 4th Brisbane film, Liselle Mel’s Skin, is a unique coming of age story starring Bridie Carter (McLeod’s Daughters), Paul Bishop (Blue Heelers) and Airlie Dodds (Neighbours), set in the Australian bush.

And also in the Friday and Saturday mix are a great line up of international films, from Russia, Iceland, Tokyo, Sarajevo, Copenhagen, Belfast and Iran.
