Waitangi At Twilight

Kingston

Waitangi at Twilight is a vibrant New Zealand community fest held in the grounds of the old Kingston Butter Factory, commemorating the historic signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, in 1840.

In New Zealand Waitangi Day is a public holiday and the most significant cultural event on the NZ calendar. The Treaty, which was signed in the Bay of Islands at James Busby’s House (now known as Treaty House)  not only made New Zealand a subject of the British Empire but also guaranteed Maoris both the rights to their land and the rights of British subjects.

To commemorate the day here, Brisbane and Logan’s New Zealand community come together at the Kingston Butter Factory for the Te Korowai Aroha-organised family friendly twilight event, with traditional food (think Hangi, Rewana and fried bread), arts and crafts souvenir stalls, live entertainment featuring modern and traditional music and dance performances and, at 11pm fireworks.

The non-stop entertainment line-up for 2015, with Emcee Chris Wana includes White Chocolate Orange, Average Steve, Shamma, Soulcutz, Ngarango Band, Turanga Ake and a whole lot more.
