Invisible Cities

Brisbane Festival

Invisible Cities is the most ambitious project ever presented by Brisbane Festival, staged in a cavernous warehouse in Yeerongpilly, for an exclusive Australian season, from September 24 to 28.

Built out of necessity to house the epic work it will host, the bespoke 1050-seat pop-up theatre will exist for five nights only – making it a true ‘festival-only’ experience.

Entire cities will be conjured in this world premiere which brings together a global collective of daring artists including acclaimed UK dance company Rambert, world-leading digital and projection storytellers 59 Productions, writer Lolita Chakrabarti, Canadian musicians A Winged Victory for the Sullen, and famed Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

This spellbinding blend of theatre, music, choreography, architectural design and projection mapping is inspired by the 1972 novel by Italian writer Italo Calvino.

As the audience takes their seat in the massive, bespoke, pop-up theatre, visions of civilisations begin to appear out of thin air and theatre-goers will become immersed in the foundation of Zenobia, a city of joy; Beersheba, a celestial city of gold; and Isadora, a city of promise, seduction and desire.

City by city, the young explorer conjures a vast and spectacular empire – all for the benefit of its emperor, who may never get to see it for himself.

Don't miss this epic, multi-artform spectacle that is set to re-invent theatre as we know it.
