Shushokuya Masa

Fortitude Valley

Shushokuya Masa is cooking up bona fide Japanese food and drinks in the heart of Fortitude Valley, within the Emporium precinct.

The restaurant was previously known as Gyoza Bar Ann, has been revamped to include iPads on each table. Simply browse the picture menu on the iPad to order an array of Japanese favourites. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as seats at the bar.

The menu features six different sections; daily specials, cold dishes, hot dishes, sushi and sashimi, seafood, meat, vegetarian and gluten free, rice and noddle and, drink and dessert. Staff at Shushokuya recommend ordering a selection of dishes to ensure you try a few authentic Japanese morsels. Consider ordering the sliced simmered duck breast as a cold dish, it’s a favourite amongst the Japanese staff.

From the hot dishes which normally act as a main – the teppan seafood is certainly a must do, featuring a range of tempura seafood and vegetables. The deep-fried soft shell crab is also a popular dish, topped with an orange dressing.

Naturally, their selection of sushi or sashimi is a must do, to complete your Japanese eating experience. If you can’t decide which flavours to choose, tuck into their assorted sushi and selection of sliced raw fish to try an array of different seafood flavours.

The dessert menu is laden with authentic Japanese sweet treats, from green tea ice cream, to sweet rice cakes. The green tea parfait is delightful dish featuring green tea ice cream, red bean, rice cake and cornflakes.

Considering the ‘shu’ of Shushokuya means sake, you can’t go past ordering a serving for the table. If not, try a plum wine, it’s sweet yet sour taste makes this drink very popular in Japan.

Need to know – Limited Emporium parking is available.

Nice to know – ‘shu’ means sake, ‘shoku’ means food.
