Rice
Bille Brown Studio
Theatre lovers are in for a must-see treat with Rice by Michele Lee – winner of the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award – presented by Queensland Theatre at Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre.
This global drama sees that heady mix of race, gender and power colliding with the story of two women against the global politics of the world food economy. As well as playing in Brisbane for its world premiere season, Rice will also tour to Sydney and Victoria, so make sure you see this powerful play before it heads out of town.
Video of RICE | 24 JUN - 16 JULMichele Lee, who won the prestigious QPDA in 2016-2017 with her first main-stage play, describes Rice as a fluid two-hander where women topple women, and women rescue women. She says that it “explores the question of women surviving in corporate CBD Australia, especially women of colour, and aims to talk to this changing face of power.”
The story centres on Nisha, who’s second-in-command of an Australian rice company and working late at night in a skyscraper. Working even later than Nisha is Yvette, who clears up her take-away. As the night ensues, they discover the many ties that bind them despite their very different standing in life as an “Indian princess” and “Chinese cleaner”.
Lee Lewis is the director, with Hsiao-Ling Tang (Single Asian Female) and Kristy Best (Gloria, and TV roles in Neighbours and Top of the Lake) playing the two roles.
