Pig & Whistle

South Brisbane

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

Located on the cusp of West End and South Brisbane, contemporary gastro pub Pig and Whistle is a convenient place to grab a delicious bite to eat and drink across the road from BCEC and a short stroll from QPAC and the Queensland Museum.

The sleek modern dining room of timber and glass is partitioned from the main bar area by a wall of wine and it is here that customers can settle in for breakfast on weekends and lunch or dinner 7 days a week until late.

Pig'N'Whistle West End

Whether it be plates to share, something casual like a burger, post-theatre dessert or a 3-course meal, Pig and Whistle has it covered, with an extensive eclectic menu offering something for all tastes.

To share there are options like Sticky BBQ Tequila Pork Ribs, Lamb Kofta or Mushroom Arancini, while Entrees include the recommended Crispy Skin Pork Belly with beetroot, poached apple, radish and anise seed or Grilled Octopus with Chorizo, pimientos de padron, romesco sauce and lemon gel.

Lunch dishes are great value, from Turkish Lamb Salad and Wagyu Beef Burger to Moroccan Style Rump Skewers and Mains (available lunch and dinner) include Gnocchi with creamed spinach, porcini butter, mushrooms and vine-ripened tomatoes, Fish of the Day (such as delectable Atlantic salmon wrapped in prosciutto), Duck Two Ways or Crispy Skin Chicken Breast.

At Pig and Whistle Steaks are something of a house specialty, for good reason: try the Flat Iron (300g) with truffled potato mash, baby carrot, assorted mushrooms, prosciutto and jus.

For afters there’s Cheese plates with a choice of 2-3 cheeses and accompaniments and as far as desserts go, Pig and Whistle is something of a sweets heaven.

Stand-outs are the Passionfruit Roulade with stone fruit salsa and ginger sorbet and the dessert that is worth crossing town for and one of the best being served in Brisbane right now – Ferrero Rocher Souffle – with fresh cherries, cocoa crumble, frangelico anglaise and dark chocolate ice-cream.

Meanwhile the mega bar next door is a hive of activity any time of day and has its own bar menu for those who want to eat and run.

Nice to know – Produce is carefully sourced, locally where possible and includes Mooloolaba prawns, beef and fish from Queensland and herbs from their own cottage at Pullenvale.

The menu may have changed since our visit.
