Pop-Up Drive-In Theatre

Hendra

Brisbane's pop-up drive-in theatre in a vacant Hendra car park returns on June 12-13, with capacity for 75 cars.

Launched by Brisbane company Get Parked, Park-In Pictures features an enormous 10m x 6m inflatable screen and audio transmission direct to vehicles and screens a mix of classics, family faves and the latest movies from early 2020 which had limited cinema runs due to COVID-19 closures.

On June 12th The Emoji Movie screens at 6pm, followed by Labyrinth at 8pm, while on June 13th Hotel Transylvania 3 screens at 5.45pm, followed by Bladerunner 2049 at 8.05pm.

Park-In Pictures also has traditional cinema snacks available, including popcorn, candy, ice cream, and soft drinks, plus some old school diner favourites like hot dogs, burgers and chips – all delivered direct to cars.

Need to know - The layout of the cinema will allow social distancing between vehicles and people will be encouraged to only leave their cars for the restroom, but can view movies from the car tray or boot. Strict measures will be in place to ensure people stay safe, offering hand sanitiser at entry points, delivering food directly to cars (which can be pre ordered on the website), keeping suitable distance between vehicles and asking people to take rubbish home with them.

Nice to know - Director Steve Gilbert has many vacant parking lots through his car parking business Get Parked which has gone stagnant through COVID-19, and wanted to find a way to put them to good use, retain staff and entertain bored Brisbane residents at the same time. If the Hendra launch is a success, he plans to source a larger site and even look to expand to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.
