Must Do Ekka
Entertainment
The capital E in Ekka also stands for a whole lot of Entertainment, with this year’s offerings guaranteed to make your trip to the best show in town a fabulously entertaining one.
The highlights are many, with a favourite sure to be the Ekka Fashion Retrospective. It’s the 25th year of the Natural Fibres Fashion Parades directed by Lindsay Bennett, and to celebrate, the impressive retrospective will showcase a favourite piece from the collections of 12 star Queensland designers. Head to the Fashion Precinct daily at 12.30pm, 1.30 and 2.30.
A highlight of any Ekka is the night program, and this year the newly designed EkkaNITES will give the crowds four exciting segments: Traditions (e.g. Woodchop and Sheepdog Trials), Hot Wheels High Octane Show (self-explanatory!) Live Music, and of course the breathtaking Fireworks Finale. Illuminated horses, FMX riders, a laser show and more will thrill all ages.
Did someone say country music? Head on down to the XXXX Stockmen’s Bar and Grill for the Country Music Showdown Competition where aspiring musicians can show what they’re made of ENTER HERE
Elsewhere, The Sound of Ekka will showcase pop and country music talents. Meanwhile, Roving Entertainment includes Farm Yard Friends and marching bands, thanks to Heritage Bank Music on the Move. To be considered to take part, contact the organisers now.
With over 70 per cent of the Ekka dedicated to free family entertainment, take advantage of the Sheep Shearing demonstrations and the beloved RACQ Animal Nursery for a cuteness overload. Young whip crackers can also enter in the Australian Stockwhip Challenge.
Foodies and cooks are catered for, with the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show Cooking Stage tantalising your tastebuds, and Dominique Rizzo will also be on hand for her Dinner with Dom segments. For $30 you can enjoy a delectable sit-down meal freshly prepared by the local celebrity chef. Then there’s the relaxing Flower and Garden Precinct at the Old Museum with food and wine at the Chill Out Green, the Secret Fairy Garden, and various displays and activities.
With all this amazing entertainment on offer, it’s surely a good time to take advantage of the Ekka’s first two-day pass to make the most of it!
