Kakadu

Mitchell Fine Art

Kakadu, an art exhibition from renowned Australian artists as a result of their journey to this amazing location, will show at Mitchell Fine Art, from August 30 – September 23.

Gallery Director, Mike Mitchell, organised the trip to the exquisite remote Kakadu landscape to inspire the five artists. There, they had the opportunity to engage with the Aboriginal traditional owners in the same area where artefacts have been found recently which indicate that our first Australians have lived here 18,000 years longer than previous thought.

The artists in the exhibition are Steve Lopes, Christine Christophersen, Franck Gohier, Euan Macleod, and Peter Hudson. They spent a week of ‘plein air’ painting (French for painting outdoors) in and around Arnhem Land, being inspired by the grand landscape, and the information they learnt from the local Aboriginal people about the significance of country.

They were also deeply affected by visiting rarely seen rock art depicting subjects such as Tasmanian Tigers, ceremony and a mail plane from the 1930s – experiences which are reflected in the resulting works.

Kakadu opens on September 1 at 6pm, with some of the participating artists in attendance. An Artist Talk will be held on Saturday, September 2, from 2pm.
