Handel's Messiah is being performed by the Queensland Choir in the splendid surrounds of Brisbane City Hall on November 28, 2021.

Established in 1872, the Queensland Choir performed at the opening of City Hall in 1930 and staged the first Messiah there in the same year. Since then it has become a Christmas tradition for generations of Brisbane residents.

Messiah is a sublime and majestic work, well known for its glorious "Hallelujah" chorus, and the magnificent art deco surrounds of Brisbane City Hall are the perfect setting to be swept away by its ethereal magic.

“Since it began, the Queensland Choir (known as Queensland’s premier chorus) has performed more than 130 performances of Messiah, starting in April 1873 with what is believed to be the first complete performance in Brisbane.  It may seem strange to us now, but in the early 1900s, the performance was often held on the evening of Christmas Day,” says Kevin Power the Musical Director of the Choir.

This year’s Messiah, is conducted by Kevin Power, with 100 Queensland choir choristers and will also feature the Sinfonia of St Andrew’s with guest soloists from Opera Queensland including  soprano Eva Kong, mezzo-soprano Hayley Sugars, tenor Virgilio Marino and baritone Timothy Newton.
