An Evening With Groucho

Gardens Theatre

Those wanting to relive the comedic magic of Groucho Marx shouldn’t miss An Evening with Groucho, starring Frank Ferrante at QUT Gardens Point Theatre.

You know you’re doing something right when the legendary comedian’s own son hires you to play him in a documentary, and it’s that sort of uncanny likeness that has critics and audiences alike coming away from An Evening with Groucho giving Ferrante rave reviews.

The L.A. Weekly summed it up: “The most consistent and accurate comment heard at intermission was, ‘This guy’s even better than Groucho was’ …uncanny…astonishing…”

High praise indeed, and if you love the hilarious antics and caustic wit of Groucho – or are yet to be delighted by his talents – then the show should be top of your list for theatre outings. In the one-man show, Ferrante performs the songs, dance routines and stand-up of Groucho during the peak of his career in the 1920s and ‘30s.

As a boy, Ferrante was lucky enough to see an ailing 86 year-old Groucho in person, and the experience stayed in his memory. Now he brings him to life with accuracy and freshness each time he takes to the stage. The award-winning actor has now done more than 2,500 performances – which are always different because of his improvisation – and still gets a thrill from the reaction of people young and old, saying that the humour of the great Groucho transcends time.
