BrisAsia returns to Museum of Brisbane in 2023 with Artist in Residence, Vanghoua Anthony Vue, until July 23, 2023.

The Hmong-Australian artist will imbue colour and connection through found objects as MoB's BrisAsia 2023 Artist in Residence during the annual BrisAsia Festival celebration of Asian art, culture, and cuisine across the river city.

The Brisbane-based artists' bold and vibrant imagery celebrates traditional Hmong textiles, weaving everyday items and recycled materials into artworks.

His aesthetic speaks to his DIY attitude instilled by his family and the broader Hmong community, whose experiences of migration required them to ‘ua li ua tau’ or ‘make do’ with what is at hand.

During his MoB residency, Vanghoua Anthony will use recycled materials to create an original installation in the Musuem's hallway entrance.

Visitors can interact with the artist at work, allowing a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process as found objects transform into arresting artworks and sculptures.

Alongside these pieces, Vanghoua Anthony has included videos of the local Hmong community and three rivers of personal significance: the Mekong River, which his parents crossed to escape to Thailand; the Logan River, which winds past his home; and the Brisbane River, which snakes through his place of work.

As a series, the videos highlight the strength of Hmong culture and the migrant experience to adapt to time and place.

The 2023 Artist in Residency program marks the third time MoB has participated in BrisAsia Festival and events will also include a 90-minute workshop with Vanghoua Anthony and a special one-off ‘lie-down’ concert featuring Grammy-nominated Tibetan artist Tenzin Choegyal.
