Where To Find The Sweetest Treats In Brisbane

One of the downsides of going out for lunch or dinner is when you miscalculate how hungry you are and don't leave room for a dessert.  Thankfully, there's an easy solution to this problem. Forget the savoury stuff and make a point of going out simply to have a pud.

Brisbane is bursting with places that can satisfy your sweet cravings. Here we've rounded up some of the most popular desserts and where to find them in the city.

Of course, you don't even need to leave your sofa to get great dessert these days. Many places will now also bring pudding to your door. Let's take a look at our options:

Cronuts

The Doughnut Bar's catchphrase is one that makes perfect sense to anyone with a sweet tooth. It's "spreading sweet rings of hand crafted happiness" and it basically sums up what the Doughnut Bar is all about. As well as freshly baked doughnuts which come in a huge array of flavours, there are also cronuts - a cross-creation of a doughnut and croissant. Inside each cronut are 64 layers of pastry and each one is three days in the making. As well as being located in Brisbane CBD and Eat Street, the Doughnut Bar is a moveable feast, thanks to its Kombi Kitchens that tour the city.

Freakshakes

One dessert trend that's been doing the rounds in the last couple of years and looks like it has no sign of slowing down is the freakshake. Australia's not been slow to embrace these decadent, oversized milkshakes. There are plenty of Brisbane eateries that will whip you up a freakshake any time of the day, but it's also a particularly nice way to treat the kids at the end of the school day.

At Mondaze in Jimboomba, there's a great selection of mega milkshakes to choose from. With names like The Big Daddy Iced Coffee, the All Chocolate Everything and the Blue Fizzer, you know these milkshakes are going to impress. They've even managed to add a Homer Simpson-style challenge to the milkshake experience, offering the $50 price tag of the 2.5 litre Big Daddy Iced Coffee back to anyone who can finish the shake in less than 30 minutes.

Ice-cream

Who would turn down the chance for a scoop of ice-cream? At Gelato Messina in Melbourne Street, you can take your pick from 40 different flavours of freshly made ice-cream every time you pop in. Added to that there are always different special flavours being created each week. But how about combining the joy of ice-cream with cake and getting one of their beautiful gelato cakes?

The Hazelnut Zucotto is their signature gelato cake. It's got gianduia and hazelnut gelato on the inside of a hazelnut sponge that's flavoured with frangelico and is served as a perfect semi-sphere coated with a glistening gianduia glazing.

Cakes

If cake's your dessert of choice, then Jocelyn's Provisions in Fortitude Valley is the place to go. As well as a range of normal cakes, such as carrot and butter cakes, they also serve cheesecake. While you might go for the lemon and passionfruit cheesecake, for out and out indulgence, there's the Chocolate Swirl cheesecake, where there's a dark chocolate swirl running through the middle of the cheesecake and splinters of white and dark chocolate and chantilly cream on the top. If you prefer a pop-in-your-mouth cake, there are also many mini cupcakes to choose from. Top of the list has to be the salted caramel cupcake.

We think you'll agree that with desserts like this, a main course is no longer required!
