Scenes From A Marriage

Playhouse Qpac

Australian TV royalty meets Ingmar Bergman when Marta Dusseldorp and Ben Winspear star in Scenes from a Marriage, from November 11 – December 3, at Playhouse, QPAC.

The Queensland Theatre production will feature the much loved Dusseldorp, who’s been ubiquitous on Australian TV screens in shows such as Janet King, A Place to Call Home and Jack Irish. She also won a Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play in 2009 playing Queen Margaret in The War of the Roses with Sydney Theatre Company.

In Scenes from a Marriage, she once again teams with real-life husband Winspear (they played spouses in A Place to Call Home). In a nice moment of marital solidarity, he too won a Helpmann in 2009 for Best Male Actor in a Play for his role in Baghdad Wedding for Company B. While he’s already performed with Queensland Theatre (in Faustus), this will be Dusseldorp’s debut with our premiere theatre company.

Scenes from a Marriage was born as a Swedish 1973 TV miniseries written and directed by film legend, Ingmar Bergman, and now it’s been given an adaptation by the much awarded Joanna Murray-Smith, reuniting with Director and Queensland Theatre Associate Artistic Director, Paige Rattray, for an Australian premiere. Christen O’Leary (Ladies in Black), Hugh Parker (Noises Off) and Tropfest Best Actress, Loani Arman (Tangle, The Picnic and Satisfaction) round out the cast.

It marks the close of Queensland Theatre’s record-breaking Season 2017 and is sure to get people talking with its subject matter – something which was blamed for supposedly influencing increased divorce rates in Europe when it first aired.

It’s the story of a seemingly ideal marriage that starts to crumble when the husband admits to his wife that he’s slept with another woman. The revelation is the catalyst for a savage battle to come and one sure to give the actors plenty of space to showcase their impressive skills.
