Lake is a must see - an extraordinary piece of visual dance theatre performed on a stage flooded with water.

The names Lisa Wilson and Kristina Chan are well-known in Australia’s culture community. The first is a choreographer known for a two-decade career in which she’s won multiple awards and worked with some of Australia and the United Kingdom’s most renowned artists, while the latter has twice received Australian Dance Awards for her skill and dedication.

And in just a little bit of time, from 15 to 17 May, Australians can see the sparks that’ll fly when the two will team up for Lake, a performance that originally saw Wilson dance the lead. As well, dancers Timothy Ohi and Hsin-Ju Chiu will join her onstage, and Lake will be rounded out with video projections (Chris Golsby) and a supernatural-sounding score (Matt Cornell).

Lake is best described as a heady experience, one where audience members’ senses will be flooded by a combination of visual and dance theatre magic. The performance tackles water and our fear of it as the dancers alternate between showcasing water’s beauty and destruction.

But instead of just describing the power of water, Wilson’s creation goes one step further: it shows it. The stage will be entirely flooded with water, causing the dancers to navigate the choreography whilst simultaneously their balance. For dancers and viewers alike, it’ll be a dance performance unlike anything they’ve experienced before, which is the main point of dance: to go boldly where few have gone before.

It’s also the kind of performance that doesn’t come along very often, which is why you should circle 15 to 17 May on your calendar, and make sure you’ve got a ride to the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. It’ll be a splashin’ good time.
