Five Centuries Of Melancholia
Uq Art Museum
Intriguing exhibition Five Centuries of Melancholia takes its cue from Albrecht Durer’s Melencolia, a ground-breaking artwork from 1514 and goes on to explore the theme of melancholia throughout five centuries of art.
The famous 500 year old engraving forms the centrepiece of the exhibition, which features works by other Renaissance artists Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn and Jusepe Ribera through 18th century master Francisco Goya and Giovanni Battista Piranesi and on to early Australian greats including Russell Drysdale, Charles Blackman and Bessie Gibson followed by the works of contemporary Oz artists like Destiny Deacon, Tracey Moffatt, William Yang and Bill Henson.
From its beginnings in the Renaissance era, visitors can gauge the changing mode of melancholia and how it has been invoked, be it by condition (as in the early times), a mood or even a perspective.
The important artworks comprising the evocative exhibition (which marks the 500th anniversary of Melencolia) have been drawn from regional, university and private collections as well as state and national art institutions.
