Camerata: The White Mouse

Concert Hall Qpac

Make sure you catch Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, Camerata, bring to life the amazing world of Australian WWII heroine, Nancy Wake, in The White Mouse at the Concert Hall, QPAC, on Sunday, December 3.

It’s Camerata’s 2017 finale after yet another triumphant year, with the instrumentalists playing without a conductor to great acclaim. The White Mouse is a music-theatre biography that’s part of a series written and performed by Tama Matheson.

Camerata The White Mouse

Featuring in the title role is Veronica Neave, with unforgettable music. This includes excerpts from George Gershwin’s Lullaby for Strings, Elgar’s Nimrod from the Enigma Variations, Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No.10 in B Minor, and more contemporary music such as Smith’s Alchemy for String Orchestra, by Australia’s Carl Vine.

Camerata The White Mouse

Actor Neave relishes her part as the brave Nancy Wake, who ran away from her family at the age of 16 and ended up helping the French Resistance – attracting the pseudonym, ‘the white mouse’. She says, “I hate wars and violence, but if they come I don’t see why we women should just wave our men a proud goodbye and then knit them balaclavas.” A sentiment Wake herself would no doubt agree with.

Camerata The White Mouse

Camerata’s level of excellence saw them receive a nomination for a prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Ensemble Concert in 2016. Founded in 1987 by string educator, Elizabeth Morgan AM, the ensemble performs a wide variety of styles for concerts, as well as delivering workshops, school talks and concerts to support the education of young string players.
