Brisbane Art Prize Exhibition
Judith Wright Centre
Come and celebrate Brisbane’s own international art prize, with the Brisbane Art Prize exhibiiton and awards night at the Judith Wright Centre.
It’s all thanks to Cathy Condon, who founded the award following a five-year campaign. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland visual artist says, “This is an annual event that brands Brisbane to the world as a contemporary cultural hub… One quarter of artists preselected are local Brisbane artists, which is fabulous.” The other preselected artists hail from all other states (except the N.T.), as well as Malaysia, Thailand, Austria, U.K. and Finland.
The award itself is unique because it has an open category of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture, but with a very rigorous size parameter (40 cm x 40 cm). The exhibition promises to be thought-provoking, with its theme for the artists being to explore the meaning of life – its significance, purpose and ultimate fate. No small subject matter!
Judging who will take out the $10,000 prize are Bruce Heiser of Heiser Gallery, Scott Maxwell (Flying Arts) and Alison Kubler, curator at UQ Art Museum. All the excitement of the gala judging will light up The Judy on 18 August from 6pm. On hand with some equally cultural entertainment will be Toowoomba-born opera singer and Conservatorium of Music student, Nina Wildman.
Need to know - The exhibition runs from August 15-21and is free to visit and the Awards Night (which is ticketed: Pre-sale $15, Door $20) is on Aug 18th at 6pm.
