Brisbane Arcade Turns 100
Brisbane City
Brisbane Arcade is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Friday, 19th April 2024 with a public celebration, promising a day filled with nostalgia, entertainment, and heartfelt tributes to this beloved institution.
Nestled in the heart of Brisbane's bustling Queen Street Mall, Brisbane Arcade stands as a testament to a century of style and grace. Since its inception in 1924 by philanthropists Dr James Mayne and Mary Emelia Mayne, this iconic arcade has not only been a beacon of fashion and luxury but also a pillar of support for medical research through its generous funding initiatives. Operations proceeds have funded the University of Queensland Medical School and medical research through the Mayne Estate philanthropic trusts.
Beyond its architectural splendour and exclusive boutiques, Brisbane Arcade holds a special place in the hearts of generations of visitors. From purchasing precious engagement rings to indulging in high tea traditions, the arcade has been a backdrop for countless milestone moments and treasured memories.
In honour of its centenary, Brisbane Arcade invites everyone to share their own Centenary Memories online, ensuring that the rich tapestry of experiences woven within its walls is celebrated and preserved for generations to come. Another way to share cherished memories can be shared by calling ABC Radio hotline on (07) 3223 0612 or emailing [email protected].
As Brisbane Arcade celebrates a century of elegance and community, it stands as a timeless testament to the enduring spirit of Brisbane. Supported by the Brisbane Economic Development Agency and ABC Radio Brisbane, this milestone is not just a celebration of the past but also a testament to the enduring legacy of giving back to the community.
