Bernard Ollis: Observations
Mitchell Fine Art
Sydney artist Bernard Ollis’s third solo exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art, titled Observations, runs from May 10 – Jun 3.
By his own definition, Ollis is hard to define in a particular style of art but his colourful, whimsical works exude humour and a love for people and places. Observations follows his artistic travels, both of place and in the feelings and emotions evoked in response to these destinations.
Subject matter includes Morocco, Montmartre, London and the vibrant colours and individual style of Brisbane.
“Some of these locations are revisits to places with fond or nostalgic memories. Some entirely new experiences,” says Ollis. “As an artist, stepping out of your comfort zone and familiarity is an important visual stimulus. Outsiders often react with fresh eyes.”
Ollis’s career has spanned over 50 years now and his work continues to be fresh and highly sought after. His colourful paintings often take in architecture, waterways and bridges from the world’s famous cities, while others are completely imagined scenarios.
Need to know - At the Opening Night of Observations, the artist will be in attendance on Friday, 12 May at 6pm. An Artist Talk will follow on Saturday, 13 May from 2pm when Ollis will speak on his inspirations for his art and life.
