George Gittoes: Night Vision
Mitchell Fine Art
Be prepared to be impressed and confronted when controversial artist, George Gittoes, has his first solo exhibition in Brisbane, titled Night Vision, at Mitchell Fine Art.
Winner of the Sydney Peace Prize, the Sydney-born Gittoes will showcase works that have been created over the past 30 years and that concentrate on imagery relating to his own series of unpublished novels and essays. His interests have been to document some of the world’s worst and most infamous conflicts, in trouble spots like Rwanda, Bosnia, Nicaragua and Cambodia. These have been represented in his art, which has been described by various people as pop art, figurative, modernist and postmodernist.
Mitchell Fine Art Director, Mike Mitchell, says that Gittoes’ work “captures the atrocities and attacks on basic human rights and have typically reflected his social, political and humanitarian observations of man’s treatment of his fellow man… Night Vision explores the ideas of why these events happen and what drives humanity to act the way it does.”
A regular finalist in prestigious Australian art awards (including winning the Blake Prize twice for religious art and the Wynne Prize in 1993), Gittoes is also represented in many galleries, including the National Gallery of Australia which acquired his important painting, The Preacher, this year.
Need to know - George Gittoes will attend the Opening Night on Friday, 29 July, 6pm. He’ll also conduct an artist talk at Mitchell Fine Art on Saturday, 30 July, 11am. The gallery is also holding a Sunday open day with wine tasting on Sunday 31st July from 11am - 3pm
Nice to know - QAGOMA will be the location on Saturday, 30 July, at 1.30pm for the screening of Gittoes’ latest film, Snow Monkey (offering an insight into the Taliban stronghold of Jalalabad in Afghanistan), which he will attend. Then at 4pm, the artist will be launching his new book, Night Vision, and will be available for book signing.
