Arje: The Mystery In The Everyday

Judith Wright Centre

We could all do with a bit of the fantastic in the mundane, and a great place to find it is in the show, Arje: The Mystery in the Everyday, from Diminuto Circus, at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

Diminuto Circus is a Chilean circus group who do physical theatre work that can be enjoyed by the whole family, with this work being about discovering the sublime moments in the everyday activities of life. Arje: The Mystery in the Everyday is described as a “wondrous odyssey brought to life by ordinary people who turn their attention to the world around them”.

The narrative of the never-seen-before show is that of a quiet young girl called Emilia who secretly possesses the art of writing and memory, and writes her stories in the air or on any surface available. She transforms her memory of the mundane into the fantastic via this process and overcomes obstacles along the way.

Arje was inspired by a Chilean philosophical reflection (the everyday and memory) and explores the everyday in a refreshing and exciting way as the performers’ bodies inhabit metaphors as they move and transcend new worlds.
