Tibet2timbuk2
Qld Multicultural Centre
Get ready for the triumphant return of eclectic Brisbane band, Tibet2Timbuk2, when they perform under the Story Bridge at the next World Music Café at Queensland Multicultural Centre.
BEMAC (Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre) is proud to bring the extraordinary trio of musicians to their fans once again. Since forming in 2008, the world music group haven’t performed live very often, but whenever they do, the critics and audiences can’t rave enough.
Filmmaker Albert Falzon said that it was not so much a performance by highly talented artists, but a meditation that would be remembered long after the evening had finished. They will be supported by Queensland Music Award 2017 winner, Matt Hsu.
So, who are Tibet2Timbuk2 and what can you expect to be treated to? Well, their music is described as “rollicking Tibetan folk, afro-reggae guitar grooves and intricate Indian tabla” so that’s quite a heady cocktail!
One of the prodigious musos creating the sounds is vocalist Tenzin Choegyal, who was displaced from Tibet at the age of four, and after growing up in a refugee camp in India, eventually found his way to Australia. He composes music that celebrates his Tibetan roots and founded the Himalayan Film Festival in Brisbane in 2013.
He’s joined by Shen Flindell and Marcello Milani. Flindell is one of Australia’s leading table players after receiving tuition from some of the great masters of the world. Recently he’s also taken up the instrument, the pakhawaj, with guidance from Japanese pakhawaji, Sri Tetsuya Kaneko. Marcello Milani is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who’s performed at festivals including Woodford, Livid, Big Day Out and National Folk Festival. He’s also the voice of Brisbane icons, The Toothfaeries.
From the joyous to the meditative, these talented musicians will excite and enchant you with their melody, harmony, bass, percussion and groove that’s completely unique.
