The Peasant Prince

Gardens Theatre

If you’ve seen and loved the film, Mao’s Last Dancer, then the whole family should get along to the new play, The Peasant Prince, at QUT Gardens Theatre in July.

Monkey Baa, an award-winning theatre company for young people, have adapted The Peasant Prince, a children’s book and memoir by Li based on his own book, Mao’s Last Dancer. He, of course, is now Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet Company and his amazing story is always fascinating to witness, no matter in which medium.

With Li’s participation in development, The Peasant Prince was written by Monkey Baa’s Creative Directors, Eva Di Cesare, Sandra Eldridge and Tim McGarry, who also provide direction. The play is an inspiration for children, with its themes of belonging, motivation, loneliness and hope, and is suitable for ages six and over.

Li says of his story about being chosen as a child to leave his rural village and family to travel to Beijing to become a world-class ballet dancer, “It’s always my hope that my life experiences inspire young people to follow their dreams and to take advantage of the boundless opportunities in their lives.”

The Peasant Prince stars John Gomez Goodway (His Mother’s Voice), Jenevieve Chang (Club Shanghai), Jonathan Chan (The Secret Island) and Edric Hong (Winter Retreat). It promises to be a special school holiday treat to inspire children and young people (and maybe even the not so young!) to follow their dreams.
