Journey Through The Cosmos
Concert Hall Qpac
Lovers of all that is wonderful and mysterious about music and the cosmos are set for an unbeatable treat, with QSO’s upcoming series of Journey Through the Cosmos concerts.
The big drawcard is the appearance of particle physicist, Professor Brian Cox OBE, who’s somewhat a rock star in the world of science – you might’ve seen him popping up on TV shows such as QI as well as featuring prominently in The Wonders of the Solar System. News of his presence has no doubt helped demand for tickets go intergalactic, with not one but two extra concerts added to the original two.
The first concert is on Thursday, 6 November, at 7pm, starting with a pre-concert talk by UK musicologist, author and radio presenter, Stephen Johnson. Then Journey Through the Cosmos kicks off at 8pm with Professor Cox on board. He’ll give a presentation about planets in our solar system before QSO performs Gustav Holst’s extraordinary, haunting symphonic work, The Planets Suite, led by Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch.
The Planets will be accompanied by video footage of the planets in the music, with the seven movements being: Mars, the bringer of War; Venus, the Bringer of Peace; Mercury, the Winged Messenger; Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity; Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age; Uranus, the Magician; and Neptune, the Mystic. A wordless, female choir from The Australian Voices is also part of the magic.
Professor Cox will also introduce a world premiere of Academy Award and Golden Globe winning composer, Dario Marianelli’s work, Voyager – a violin concerto, featuring virtuoso violinist, Jack Liebeck.
