BOWERBIRD CAFE CLOSED PERMANENTLY IN MAY 2015

An unexpected middle of suburbia find is this cute yet classy corner cafe which also happens to be uber child friendly. Despite half the café being devoted to young children & their parents/carers, thanks to the cleverly divided use of space it’s still a highly convivial place for adults without children in tow. And not to forget dogs, who are also made to feel welcome with a welcome dog bowl and tin dog sculpture out front.

The main area of the cafe is also a shop with walls lined with imported shoes, handmade cards, scarves, bags and trinkets for sale while the children & accompanying adults have a room to themselves out back albeit with one of the best collections of toys and playthings we’ve seen in an eatery. Chalk boards line the walls, there are kid size tables & chairs and high chairs for the littlies, quality wooden toys, puzzles, story books and colouring in sheets and pencils. Adjacent to this area is a quaint room with stained glass windows or an outside counter with stools overlooking the lawn.

As for the food, it’s top notch, with homemade gourmet sausage rolls, quiches, croissants, cannoli, biscotti and raisin toast and expertly brewed ‘Saint Coffee’ coffee.

There are also plenty of quality child-size sweet things on offer including cake pops, mini cupcakes and short bread for $2.

Dog owners will rejoice in the positioning of one of Brisbane’s best dog parks – an unfettered 4ha, at the end of the street and across the bridge. There’s also a small children’s park adjacent although keep in mind a 3 minute drive/half hour pram push away is the fabulous Kidspace.
