Highland House
Paddington
HIGHLAND HOUSE CLOSED ITS DOORS PERMANENTLY IN 2015 AFTER 42 YEARS TRADING.
Highland House is a little piece of Scotland (with a touch of Ireland) found in a quaint old corner store in the back streets of Paddington.
Since 1972 the family established business has been keeping Brisbane in kilts, sporrans & pipers and is one of only a few outlets throughout Australia that stocks such a sizable array of Scottish & Irish clothes, instruments and goods, including luxury brands.
Whether or not you have Celtic ancestry it’s a fascinating place to check out, with tartan galore (including the special Queensland tartan), kilts for all occasions, bagpipes and bagpipe accessories, highland dancing shoes and CDs of traditional Scottish pipers and crooners.
Clan members (check the charts to locate your clan) will find a host of clan wear from cufflinks, lapels, key rings, charms and pendants to clan crested cotton tea towels, sgian dubh (traditional dress daggers), whisky glasses, postcards and writing paper.
There’s tableware like Dunoon mugs and Porridge spurtles, Derryvale Damask tablecloths, whisky flasks, Edinburgh crystal and Thistle mugs.
Amongst the clothes and accessories can be found Glen Appin kilt hose, pure wool caps, scarves, tartan boxer shorts, childrens’ frocks, kilts and shirts, hunting caps and tartan garters for brides.
Here’s also the place to find Scottish snacks like Edinburgh Castle rock, traditional shortbread in a tin and Fry’s Chocolate Cream.
Meanwhile in the Irish section are Celtic rhinestones, leprechaun figurines, Irish book guides, mugs, spoons and sought after Royal Tara fine bone china, damask tablecloths and tea towels with Irish stew recipes.
