Beatles Afternoon
Fortitude Valley
It was fifty years ago today that Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play and Brisbane is celebrating with a Beatles Afternoon.
Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has been touted as the best album of all time and the album that changed music forever. Yet when it was released, iconic songs such as Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, With a Little Help from My Friends and A Day in the Life were banned from being played on radio due to perceived drug references.
To mark the 50th anniversary special occasion, Beatlemania returns to the New Globe Theatre's retro cinema, with a visual feast of Beatles footage, rarities, music videos and archival clips on the big screen.
The program, which focuses on the band’s output from 1966-67, is as follows:
1.30pm - Settle in for the afternoon with a Beatles video clip compilation
2.00pm - The Making of Sgt Peppers documentary (45 min)
2.45pm – Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album is presented track by track utilising Beatles clips, performance footage & classic covers
3.30pm – Magical Mystery Tour (1967) screening. In December, The Beatles divided fans with this psychedelic television special.
