Sauce Bistro
Ashgrove
Updated: Jan 15, 2026
Sauce Bistro is one of Brisbane's suburban gems - a slick little neighbourhood restaurant in Ashgrove that combines a warm homey atmosphere with the kind of food that would be right at home in a fine dining city restaurant.
The cosy and chic 30-seat bistro is an inviting space for family or friends, or date night, with a line-up of wine bottles along one wall, whilst outside is a smattering of benches and barrels perfect for a bite to eat and glass of wine, sake or beer. Pooches are welcome to join their owners out here.
Owned and operated by Chef Stuart McGill and Sommelier Miza Ohshige, everything here at Sauce Bistro is on point, from the dishes that are largely made, cured, smoked snd pickled from scratch (using locally sourced produce where possible) to the bespoke curated wine list.
On the menu, which is a seamless fusion of Asian and European flavours, you'll find snacks such as Pacific oysters, natural or with pink peppercorn mignonette; and 'sashimi of spangled emperor' with avocado, cured tomato and shiso.
Starters to share include house-smoked salmon with kafir cream, rye blini, watercress & ikura; and Sauce Bistro smoked wagyu pastrami with pernod sofrito, neufchatel cheese & Spanish onion. Larger plates to share include the Sauce Bistro Signature, a must-try platter of house delicacies including Pacific oysters, Mooloolaba king prawns, sashimi, a selection of house-smoked meats, Mount Zero olives & pickles. On the counter is a slicer with all cured meats sliced to perfection just before serving.
For Mains, recommended dishes include Riverine sirloin (grain finished) with sauce Bernaise and a choice of sides - seasonal vegetables, leafy salad with ricotta & balsamic or fries. Or try one of the pasta dishes such as Agnolotti with ricotta, herb sauce, lemon & zucchini (pasta, ricotta and sauce all house-made).
As for dessert if you've never tried Spotted Dick Pudding here's the place to try it, with the heavenly fresh-baked pudding served in sherry custard with marinated cherry.
Whilst Sauce Bistro is primarily wine-focused, with an impressive range of boutique wines (the majority of which are organic, biodynamic and sourced from small producers), there's also a selection of sakes which are chosen to match with each of the dishes, as well as house cocktails, beers, spirits and liqueurs. Otherwise, an interesting choice of non-alcoholic beverages includes mocktails, Yumbo grapefruit or lemonade; Japanese teas (black or popcorn). Egyptian peppermint tea; and freshly brewed hot or iced coffee.
Good to know - Sauce Bistro is nestled in the tiny retail strip next to Famished on Frasers, with a handful of offstreet parking spots out front. Otherwise there's plenty of street parking available.
