Tequila Mockingbird

Ipswich Civic Centre

The return of the powerful Matilda Award-winning play, Tequila Mockingbird, by shake & stir theatre company will be a treat for audiences when it plays at Ipswich Civic Centre.

The work received uniformly rave reviews when it played to rapt audiences a couple of years ago, resulting in six nominations for the coveted Matilda Awards, including winning Best Mainstage Production. Written by shake & stir’s Co-Artistic Director, Nelle Lee – who also stars in it – Tequila Mockingbird is directed by Michael Futcher and also features Ross Balbuziente, Shannon Haegler, Barbara Lowing, Bryan Probets and Nick Skubij.

The sometimes confronting story looks at the racist underbelly of a remote Australian town after a young woman is attacked. The community targets a young Indian doctor who’s recently moved to the area, and it’s up to one local man to uncover the truth and defend the accused man. But first he has to deal with matters closer to home.

Themes of the consequences of alcohol abuse and the perversion of justice are also explored, making Tequila Mockingbird a bold piece of theatre from the accomplished Queensland company that’s also produced Animal Farm, 1984 and Wuthering Heights.

The Australian theatre critic said of Tequila Mockingbird, “Outstanding production… has you laughing, gasping, sickened, outraged, uplifted and saddened by turns in a deeply moving night.”
