The Bin Chicken Trail

Brisbane

Love them or loathe them, the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornic Molucca for our ornithological readers) is often referred to as Brisbane’s unofficial mascot, and now we have The Bin Chicken Trail in Brisbane to honour them.

One Brisbane artist is making the humble ibis a celebrity around town, with more than a dozen of his unique and beautiful metal Binny sculptures dotted across Greater Brisbane to be enjoyed.

Here’s where to spot a number of them!

There are also Binnys that reside in Wellington Point, Coopers Plains, Newstead and even in Bundaberg, with plans for more on the way.

More affectionately known as bin chickens, these native Australian birds do earn their place in the animal food chain, preying on the likes of small insects and grubs that otherwise cause harm to many important eco-systems.

But, it’s when our urban sprawl takes over their natural habitats of grasslands, wetlands and swampy mudflats that the balancing apple cart of ‘who lives where’ tips over. And the bin chickens swoop to enjoy the spoils!

Nice to know – You can order your very own custom-made Binny for your home or business, with proceeds going towards supporting wildlife conservation charities. Click HERE to enquire.

Need to know – There are a couple of Binnys that are within private residences, with all the others the property of businesses. Please be mindful of this when you’re on the trail spotting them.
